Booker Guyton, head coach at Edison of Stockton and leader of the North team, spent the opening days of practice adjusting after nearly 10 previously committed players opted out before the week began. By Wednesday, the North had regrouped with 26 players at practice, including several recent Edison graduates and a few additions from other schools, giving the roster enough talent and size up front to stay competitive for Saturday night's matchup.

The South team had a steadier buildup at Gregori High in Modesto. Coaches Trent Merzon of Oakdale and Tim Garcia of Davis of Modesto finalized the roster by Wednesday after a few late additions and withdrawals, while veteran assistants Mike Glines and Mark Malone helped guide preparations.

The 47th Central California Lions All-Star Football Game marked the event's return for the first time since 2019 after the COVID-19 pandemic. The game was set for Saturday, June 24, 2023 at Wayne Schneider Stadium on the campus of Tracy High School, with the North serving as the home team. The North entered the game holding a 25-19-1 edge in the all-time series.

Fans could buy tickets online through GoFan for $10, while on-site purchases for tickets, t-shirts, concessions, and game programs were listed as cash only. Both teams were scheduled to continue practicing on Thursday and Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., with the North at Edison High and the South at Gregori High.
